Service learning projects provide opportunities for students to apply core course competencies to real life situations while providing a service to an organization. Participants in the 2019 Arboriculture course (FNRM 3501) performed limited visual assessments of risk for 1,898 urban trees located on the University of Minnesota's St. Paul campus. This was in partnership with the University's Landcare department who maintains all Twin Cities Campus trees.
Limited visual assessments are used to survey large populations of trees for major defects that could pose a risk to people or valued property. Often this is done from a vehicle that drives down roads inspecting trees. Students in this project walked their assigned areas and performed a 360 degree inspection from the ground. Data was recorded using ESRI Collector app on tablet devices. Final data was presented to Landcare for use in managing their urban forest.
